About Amanda
I'm Amanda Hess, and I'm a writer. In May 2025, Doubleday will publish my debut work of memoir and cultural criticism, Second Life: Having a Child in the Digital Age. You can preorder it now.
I am a critic-at-large at the New York Times, where I write essays on internet and pop culture and contribute to the New York Times Magazine. I have also written Times profiles of significant artists, including Tina Turner, Sinead O'Connor, Kathleen Hanna and Judy Collins. You can find a full archive of my New York Times bylines here.

My work has been published in Best American Magazine Writing, Best American Sportswriting, Elle, ESPN the Magazine, NYLON, The Village Voice, The Washington City Paper and WIRED, and has been awarded with a National Magazine Award in Public Interest, a Hillman Award, a Mirror Award and Front Page Awards.
In 2013, my friends and I co-founded TOMORROW, a one-shot magazine about the future. I also contributed an essay about teenage girls who ship members of boy bands.

I grew up in Wisconsin, Nevada, Washington and Arizona. I live in Brooklyn with my faaaaamily. ✨
